On April 8, 2026, Anthropic sent an email to all Pro/Max subscribers announcing that third-party harnesses no longer draw from subscription limits. Effective April 7, 8pm PT, tools like Hermes, Plandex, PicoClaw, Pi, and Refact now require extra usage credits billed separately from subscriptions. The email framed this as "continuing to roll out" a previously shared policy, but for many users this was the first they heard of it.
But here is the critical detail: Claude Code is not a third-party harness. It is Anthropic's official CLI tool. They are forcing all users to use Claude Code directly and removing any third-party harnesses from their subscription benefits.
This policy was introduced mid-subscription. Users who paid for annual or monthly subscriptions expecting full access to all Claude products now face a choice: use Claude Code directly, pay extra for third-party harnesses, accept a one-time credit equal to their monthly subscription price (redeemable by April 17), or cancel and get an automatic refund (before April 9).
The Problem
It is fundamentally illegal to sell you something and then change the product entirely after you have paid for it.
If a seller sells you a car, it should be a car and it should drive. If an AI company sells you an AI, it should be an AI and you should be able to use it. Period.
Users paid for access to Claude. They did not pay for a subscription that Anthropic can unilaterally redefine whenever they want. This is not a subscription. This is a rental agreement that Anthropic can change at will.
Anthropic's actions violate the trust of paying customers. But this goes beyond broken trust. It is fundamentally illegal.
Instead, Anthropic has:
- Introduced a policy change after users already committed to subscriptions
- Unilaterally decided that third-party integrations no longer count toward subscription limits
- Forced users to either pay extra or cancel within a 24-hour window
- Created artificial scarcity where none existed before
This is not how you treat paying customers. This is not how you build trust. This is not how you build a sustainable business.
The Path Forward
Open-source models offer true freedom. You can run them locally, integrate them with your tools, and never worry about Anthropic changing their terms again. Tools like opencode with local models provide the same capabilities without the subscription trap.
But you do not even need to go fully local. Providers like OpenRouter give you access to dozens of models from different companies through a single API. Use Claude when you want it, switch to Gemini or Llama when it makes sense. Pay for what you use, no subscriptions, no lock-in.
Most AI providers today use a credit or subscription system. Switching is as simple as changing an API key and an endpoint. There is no technical barrier. The only thing holding you back is habit.
This is not just about Claude Code. This is about who controls your development tools. Anthropic wants to be the gatekeeper. You can choose to be free instead.
Requesting a Refund
Anthropic's email offers a refund if you cancel before April 9. The one-time credit equal to your monthly subscription price is separate from that. It is not compensation for the policy change. It is a gesture.
But if you had extra usage credits loaded into your account, those are your funds. Anthropic has no legal right to withhold money you paid for a product they unilaterally changed.
I am requesting a full refund of my subscription and the $150 I had in extra usage credits. Changing the terms of a paid subscription after payment has been collected is not a policy update. It is a breach of the agreement under which I paid. I did not agree to these new terms.
If you are in the same situation, do not settle for the partial refund they offer. Request a full refund of everything you paid, subscription and extra usage credits included. If they refuse, escalate through your payment provider or the appropriate consumer protection channels.
